Rush-hour on the A rain. A blind man staggers forth, his cane tapping lightly own the aisle. He leans against the door, raises a violin to chin, and says I’m sorry to bother you, folks. But please. Just listen. And it kills me, the word sorry. As if something like music should be forgiven. He nuzzles into the wood like a lover, inhales, and at the first slow stroke, the crescendo seeps through our skin like warm water, we who have nothing but destinations, who dream of light but descend into the mouths of tunnels, searching. Beads of sweat fall from his brow, making dark roses on the instrument. His head swooning to each chord exhaled through the hollow torso. The woman beside me has put down her book, closed her eyes, the baby has stopped crying, the cop has sat down, and I know this train is too fast for dreaming, that these iron jaws will always open to swallow a smile already lost. How insufficient the memory, to fail before death. how will hear these notes when the train slides into the yard, the lights turned out, and the song lingers with breaths rising from empty seats? I know I am too human to praise what is fading. But for now, I just want to listen as the train fills completely with warm water, and we are all swimming slowly toward the man with Mozart flowing from his hands. I want nothing but to put my fingers inside his mouth, let that prayer hum through my veins. I want crawl into the hole in his violin. I want to sleep there until my flesh becomes music.

When we ourselves are not truly in a place of peace and we go out and try to create peace in the world, it becomes a fragmented and sometimes even corrupt form of peace. This happens because only peace can create peace, and unless we are the embodiment of it, we are projecting our bias of what peace should look like onto other people’s lives. To be at peace means to accept reality as is. Embodying peace is, in fact, the very essence of what it means to be free, as well as offering this freedom to others.

One day I shall sit down and ponder! I shall ponder over how I used to wander But I shall never wander anymore A day is coming! Oh yes a day is coming! A day is coming when I shall see redemption No more wandering! Oh yes! No more wandering! A day is surely coming One day I shall sit down and remember! I shall remember how arduous the journey was But I shall never see an arduous journey anymore A day is coming! Oh yes a day is coming! A day is coming when there shall never be a journey to take No more journeys! Oh yes! No more journeys! A day is surely coming One day I shall sit down and count the footprints! I shall count the footprints of the tyrants and the oppressors But I shall never see tyranny and oppression anymore A day is coming! Oh yes a day is coming! A day is coming when I shall see redemption Nor more tyranny! Oh yes! No more oppression! A day is surely coming One day I shall sit down and think about the rejections. I shall remember the rejections from people far and near But I shall never experience their rejections anymore A day is coming! Oh yes a day is coming! A day is coming when I shall never see rejection No more rejections! Oh yes! No more rejections! A day is surely coming One day I shall come to an understanding! I shall come to understand the things that were far from my understanding And they shall never be far from my understanding anymore A day is coming! Oh yes a day is coming! A day is coming when I shall have an understanding An understanding! Oh yes! An understanding! A day is surely coming

Sadly, many storytellers and artists are still addicted to the old delusions (happy is boring, evil is interesting) about the risks of good mental health. Even those who don’t view peace of mind as a threat to their creative power often believe that it’s a rare commodity attained through dumb luck….It’s possible to define a more supple variety of happiness that does not paralyze the will or sap ambition….the number one trait of happy people is a serious determination to be happy. Bliss is a habit you can cultivate, in other words, not an accident.
